If you have a dogs that begs at mealtime it can be a big distraction and can make just the fact of sitting down to a quiet dinner seem impossible. To stop this begging, the remedy to any dog behavior problem is more training, so here is a technique you can use to hopefully start enjoying your mealtime.
It is really best that you start this training session when you are not actually eating. Pretend to sit down at the dinner table and wait for your dog to start begging.
Once you hear your dog start to beg, tell him to either “lay” or “sit.” The best command to teach is to have him go over to his bed, so say “go to bed.”
Try to lead your dog over to his bed and make him stay there for a few minutes and go back to the dinner table. Now, repeat this process until your dog actually will go to his bed and lay there for an entire dinner.
If you have children that like to feed the dog during mealtime, you might just have to keep your dog out of the dining room, or teach your children not to feed a begging dog.
Another way you can decrease the begging at mealtime, is to feed the dog his own dinner right when your family sits down to eat. This should at least keep the dog busy enough for you to enjoy your meal with the hassle of dealing with him.
So if you have a dog that begs at mealtime, just teach your dog to go to his bed and train him to stay there for 15 or 20 minutes. As always, make sure you give lots of positive attention when your dog does something right.
