Tips For Quickly Housebreaking A Chihuahua

When you are housebreaking a Chihuahua, it should be done on a rigid schedule and there should not be any doubt about who is in charge. Since Chihuahuas are naturally temperamental you should start when they are young by correcting and teaching your puppy how to behave, and housebreaking is no exception.

Chihuahuas are small and their bladders do not hold much so they tend to have accidents at night. One way to prevent this is to give them no water two hours before bedtime. Also no water should be given overnight either. Just by doing this simple tip, most accidents can be avoided.

Your dog must also know that there is a routine to this housebreaking stuff, and that routine will be followed everyday. Also, make sure everyone in the family follows this rule as well. If you have to go away for the weekend, you need to know that your daughter will also keep your puppy on this schedule.

If you fail to stick to a strict schedule, the progress of potty training your Chihuahua is greatly slowed down, and even reversed.

You might also think about buying a crate for your dog, since unsupervised puppies tend to have more accidents. If you find that you are not able to always monitor your dog’s movement in the house, then keep them in a crate to prevent accidents. You can keep them tethered to a leash, but they tend to get tangled up pretty quickly.

The main thing when you are housebreaking a Chihuahua is to have lots of patience and give lots of positive reinforcement.
